4/17 Janet Ryan: Metalsmithing- Beach Stone Pendant or Ring
April 17th from 9 am until 5 pm (with a lunch break)
Open to all skill levels. Adults.
No experience is necessary.
Create a sterling silver pendant or ring with a Lake Michigan beach stone. Students will learns the basic skills in design, bezel making, soldering and stone setting to create your one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. Students will complete their jewelry in the class and take it home.
A detailed class handout is provided.
NOTE: All students will use a kit containing a suitable beach stone and the silver needed. Kit fee payable directly to instructor. Pendants are $35 and Rings are $45 beginning January 2026.
Students with prior metalsmithing may be able to bring their own stone with prior approval from instructor.

Janet creates unique jewelry pieces using Sterling Silver, mixed metals, beach stones, authentic beach glass, and other natural stones. She started collecting stones and beach glass along the Lake Michigan shore as a child and began creating and selling jewelry in 2005. In addition to designing and creating jewelry, Janet teaches Metalsmithing and jewelry workshops in art centers in and around Leelanau County. She co-teaches the Silversmithing class for the Grand Traverse Rock and Mineral Club and was invited by the International Society of Experimental Artists to teach at their Summer 2021 Annual Symposium on Mackinac Island. jartjewelry.com
Students to Bring:
• Drawing paper & sharp pencil
• Fine tip black sharpie
• Beach stone - a 1/2” to 1” round or oval beach stone that is somewhat flat on the bottom (or a cabochon). See image in the class description on stones that will work well in the class.
• Any glasses/magnification needed for close work
• Apron if available
• Please wear older clothes was much of this work is messy and some involves a mild acid
