TAKE FLIGHT! WATERCOLOR POURING, SKIES & MASKING

Take a ride on the H2O plane pouring fresh pigment and lots of water.
·       Fly safely into the skies during a storm while you create a magnificent tempest. Watch huge storm clouds appear as your paint dances across the paper. Using drawing gum, lightning will flash, explode, and spark against the dark atmosphere.
·       Fly a colorful kite contrasted against a sunshine sky! Develop your summer clouds with different techniques, using negative space, lifting, wet-in-wet, and brushwork.
·       If we have time: Watch it rain! Rainfall in the distance, sun breaking thru!

Supply List: If you are buying supplies for the first time check out the minimum supplies (Bold)

•  Pencil (HB or softer #2 school pencils are fine)
•  Sketchbook/Blank Paper
•  Kneaded Eraser
•  Watercolor Tube Paints in basic colors. The techniques for this class will require fresh paint out of a tube, not paint dried on your palette. Bring any & all of your favorite colors you own. If you are a beginner, Van Gogh brand is suggested because it has a lot of pigment, not a lot of filler. Van Gogh “basic” color names are below. Other student brands include Grumbacher & Cotman, they have similar colors. Bring what you can find if you are not buying online.

•  Burnt Umber (brown)
•  Cerulean blue (sky blue)
•  Perm Blue Violet (dark purple)
•  Permanent Lemon Yellow
•  Permanent Orange
•  Permanent Red Deep
•  Sap Green
•  Raw sienna
•  Quinacridone Rose (red purple)
•  Ultramarine deep (dark blue)
•  3 Brushes You will need, at a minimum, 3 brushes. Any brushes with fine, thin hair will work, usually labeled for Watercolor/Acrylic. Simply Simmons brand is great. (Brushes with thicker bristles or hair, usually labeled for Acrylic/Oil do not hold water)
•  Small pointed round, #6 or #8,
•  Flat, ½” or ¾”
•  A bigger brush for washes (If beginner, I’ll lend you one until you understand what to buy)
•  Small (⅛” or ¼”) flat
•  Rigger or Script brush for tree limbs
•  Sponge (Natural is great, but a unused kitchen sponge will work)
•  D’Arches Watercolor 140lb Cold Pressed (CP) Paper (it’s hard to find locally, I’ll bring some for purchase)
•  Student papers such as Canson or Strathmore, usually in pads, are great for doing preliminary sketches. Although cheaper, they tend to produce unacceptable results, such as pulling up paper, and chalky washes from the sizing.
•  Palette (at least a 10” x 10” mixing area You will need, at a minimum, any flat white surface to mix colors; White plastic, Styrofoam, or waxy coated (waterproof surface) plates work really well)
•  Small cups (dixie cups, small plastic cups or bowls, to mix paint w/water for pouring) (Sorry this is supposed to be in line with the other bulleted items, but I can't fix it)
•  Board/s (at least 13”x16”) to hold w/c paper. We will be working on several 1/4 sheets (11” x 15” approx.) at once, so if you can bring more than one surface to work on, even a couple sheets of foam core or heavy cardboard will suffice for the class. Covering them with clear packing tape will make switching paintings easier also.
•  Water Container (A BIG container for rinsing brushes, flat and wide, like a cool whip container [eat the cool whip first], a Ziplock or off-brand food storage container.) We’ll be rinsing a lot!
•  Masking Tape
•  Paper Towel
•  Spray Bottle w/ Adjustable Nozzle (not fine mist)
•  Humor (maximum amount, no minimum here)
