Dark Sky - Why It Matters

  • Northport Arts Association 301 N. Mill Street Northport, MI United States (map)

Hosted by the Dark Sky Committee of Northport Energy

Presenter: Mary Stewart Adams

Dark sky is about more than seeing the night sky. It is also about reducing energy costs, health & safety, and protecting wildlife.

Come and learn more about all aspects of dark sky, including the stories it tells of our human journey.

About our speaker...Mary Stewart Adams, star lore historian and storyteller, is dedicated to a humanities-based approach to understanding our celestial world, and the arts and sciences it inspires. Mary led the initiative that achieved International Dark Sky Park designation for the Headlands in 2011, which was only the 9th such park in the world at the time. Under Mary's direction, the Headlands was named the 2017 International Dark Sky Place of the Year by the International Dark Sky Association. Over the years, Mary's work has taken her around the globe, where she advocates for protecting the night sky in order to nurture healthy human imaginations. She has received numerous honors for her work and can be heard each week on Interlochen Public Radio with her "Storyteller's Night Sky" segment.
