DENICE GOLDSCHMIDT

Before moving north from Indiana 23 years ago, I was an active printmaker. My collection of edition hand-pulled original woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs is a result of many years of joy I spent over my press. Cutting the wood, filing zinc plates, and carefully drawing on my treasured Bavarian lithographic stones were treasured times. Printmaking is labor-intensive, and it has taken a backseat now to my painting.

As most artists will say, “I get lost while painting.”  That is true for me, as well.  My work is realistic, with enough abstract elements to enhance the design. When I choose a subject, like a barn, I make up the landscape around it, creating drama with light.  I use yellow liberally along with its complement, purple, in all its bold and soft hues.  I love to paint night scenes with lit windows at dusk, depicting the warmth of a home settling in safe for the night.  I mix my blacks to control their warmth and coolness, rarely using black from a tube.  My students attest to my insistence on their doing this as well!

I continue writing children’s stories and illustrating them in watercolor. My passion for this comes from the characters I write about.  A collection of stuffed dolls and bears we’ve had since our children were little have developed their personalities over the years.  In the stories, they experience problems – just as you and I do – and find their solutions in the Bible, in Scriptures that heal hearts and relationships.  I have them featured on FaceBook:  https://www.facebook.com/TheStufffedStories.  My hardbound books can be purchased through my email: denicegoldschmidt@yahoo.com

My teaching painting with Northport Arts Association is a delight.  One high point I pass along to my students is composition.  When that is in place in their painting, developing their style is set free – which I encourage.  They have what it takes, and persevering and following their hearts will grow their talent.  It is beyond exciting when I see them reach an “aha moment.”

Bella Galleria and Courtyard Fine Arts in Traverse City represent my work.  My studio is in our home on Cathead Bay, Northport.  I welcome your visit and am happy to share my prints and paintings with those who come.  Do call to set a time:  231-386-9058.
